1999-2004 Ford Mustang Side Tension Cables – 36 1/2″
Pair of Side Tension Cables that fit the 1999 through 2004 Ford Mustang Convertible. These cables are 36 1/2″ in length.
Like most convertible tops, the Mustang uses steel tension cables that are threaded into the pockets that run along the side windows to hold the canvas in place against the top frame assembly.
You can check your existing cables easily. With the top up and windows open, run your fingers along the edge of the top until you feel the cable inside edge of the top. If it feels tight, then it can most likely be reused when you replace your old convertible top. If it is loose, then it still may just need to be re-tensioned during the installation of the new top or you may need a new set of spring loaded tension cables.
An installer can also repair damaged tension cables, but if you would like to also replace the tension cables at the same time you replace your convertible top, this is the item you need.

Haven’t seen them yet at function – it’s raining too much at the moment. Whole roof overall is looking good.
When it came time to replace the top on my 1999 Mustang GT researched the most popular brands and materials. I found it difficult but in the end I decided to order the Sierra Brand top from Auto Tops Direct. The website states that most orders are shipped within 24 hours but the sales rep on the phone told me the Mustang tops weren’t in stock and it would have to be put into production which would be approximately four weeks. I also understood that there could be delays at the border so it could be quite a while before I received the top. I ordered the top on a Monday and to my surprise it arrived two days later on Wednesday. How they manage to ship from California to Ontario in such a short time is beyond me. I haven’t installed the top yet so can’t can’t comment on that but everything that came looks fantastic. I ordered the top, tension cables and headliner. The pads weren’t available so I was thinking I would either reuse the original pads or order them from an alternate source.
Cables were exact replacements for current cables. They shipped quickly and were well packed. Only suggestion I could make were if they were labeled left/right.
The replacements are heavier gauge cable and spring figured since this was going to be the 2nd top we had better replace them too was happy to see the quality was better than what was oe
